The big news sweeping the tech world yesterday was the discovery of a package of patches released to testers that aims to fix many of the performance and reliability problems that have plagued many Vista users since the OS release in January. While not available through Windows Update yet, details have emerged as to what specifically is being fixed with the patch set, and for the most part it looks like the big winners this time will be gamers and users who push a lot of multimedia on their systems.
Some of my favorite fixes:
- Improved File Copy Speeds (And more accurate time estimates)
- Improved compatibility with video drivers
- Improved reliability of systems that were upgraded from XP to Vista
- Improved quality of playback for HD DVD and Blu-ray discs on large monitors
No word yet on when end-users will see these patches rolled out with other monthly updates. But if these patches deliver on even half of what they promise, Microsoft will have made serious gains in addressing user criticisms of their latest OS offering.
